A $50 Lesson
I recently asked my friends’ little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, “If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?”
She replied, “I’d give food and houses to all the homeless people.”
Her parents beamed.
“Wow…what a worthy goal.” I told her, “But you don’t have to wait until you’re President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I’ll pay you $50. Then I’ll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house.”
She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, “Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?”
I said, “Welcome to the Republican Party.”
… Her parents still aren’t speaking to me.

Dear Warren,
If I am not the only Liberal who reads your Blog, I seem to be the only one taking time to occasionally “counterpoint” your conservative views. I honestly enjoy the back and forth.
In this case, “The $50 lesson”, are you adding yet another “Thou shalt not…” to the robust Republican platform focused on abortion and homosexual rights, that has resulted in a national decrease of 7% in the percentage of adults identifying themselves as Republicans? (Reported by Pew Research today). So, how many more middle-class foreclosure victims of the Bush recession can you drive into the arms of the Democrats by saying “no handouts to you lazy homeless bums”? In 2004 30% of our citizens said they were Republicans. The new Pew poll says you’re down to 23% in 2009. If you stick with your current direction, I don’t see why you can’t get that number below 20% by year-end.
The GOP’s national political leaders (Limbaugh and Hannity)make lots of money off this fear agenda, but average Americans now see where the insanity and failure of that Bush/Cheney agenda took us. Right off the cliff.
