Political musings from Warren E. Peterson

Bashing George W. Bush

Posted by Warren Peterson on November 5, 2008

The Wall Street Journal published an opinion piece by Jeffrey Shapiro that reflrcts on the public and political treatment of George W. Bush. President Elect Obama should read it.

An excerpt:

“The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace. The attacks launched against him have been cruel and slanderous, proving to the world what little character and resolve we have. The president is not to blame for all these problems. He never lost faith in America or her people, and has tried his hardest to continue leading our nation during a very difficult time.

Our failure to stand by the one person who continued to stand by us has not gone unnoticed by our enemies. It has shown to the world how disloyal we can be when our president needed loyalty — a shameful display of arrogance and weakness that will haunt this nation long after Mr. Bush has left the White House.”

What planet has Shapiro been living on for the past eight years? The reason that Bush is not treated with respect is quite simple: he has violated the trust of the people of this country by repeatedly, 1) withholding or distorting information, and outright lying, to its citizens, 2)abusing and outright violating the constitutional limits of his Presidential power on many issues, including torture, 3)driven the federal deficit into the stratosphere, and the US Dollar into the tank, with irresponsible, misdirected spending, 4)reduced federal revenue with tax cuts for the already-wealthy, thereby exacerbating problem #3, and finally, 5) his lack of leadership in failing to effectively regulate a runaway Wall Street, which now has wrecked Main Street, has earned him the enmity of the very citizens he swore to protect. George Bush will almost certainly go down in history as one of, if not the worst President we have ever had, and he has taken his own GOP down with him. Respect? Not for someone who turned this country into a Banana Republic and lost us the respect of every other free nation in the world.

Given how much the hard right had to lie over the last eight years, I should not be surprised but am, that they would try and rewrite history.
Many Americans, true patriots all, will never forget and never forgive that when George Bush and his supporters ran our country into the ditch again and again with transparently stupid and transparently short term minded public policies, that the media cheered him on and bent over backwards to pretend that his disastrous actions were not as they seemed. It was only a few years ago that that idiot on MSNBC’s Hardball, was calling those who criticized George Bush “nuts” and “extremists”, and that is only one example of the constant and pathetic excuse making and BS that the media provided in support of that serially incompetent president. Amazing that so many hard right opinion makers would have the chutzpah to lie and pretend that george bush was not enabled by a complacent and pathetic press for about six of his eight years. Republicans have only to look in the mirror if they need to see the reason for why George Bush is so hated, it is because you let him do whatever he wanted and the media played along uncritically for six of the last eight years!
